November? Prune this, but not that

Confused over what to prune and what not at this time of year? Read below to learn what needs pruning now and what should wait until spring.

November is the time to prune down rose canes and buddleia (butterfly) bushes. Prune them just enough to prevent damage from winter storms; save the hard pruning for early spring. While it is tempting, now is not the time to trim grape vines. They should be pruned in mid- to late-winter when they are dormant.

I love tearing things out of the ground. I love digging and discarding. I love pruning. In fact, I love pruning so much that I once gave myself carpal-tunnel syndrome because I attacked a trumpet vine with so much dedication. - Susan Orlean
